Joseph Winlock
Joseph Winlock (1826-1875) served as Director of the Nautical Almanac Office Nov 23, 1856 - August 9, 1859, and Sept. 18, 1861-May 1, 1866. A grandson of Revolutionary general Joseph Winlock and a graduate of Shelby College, Kentucky in 1845, immediately upon graduation Winlock was appointed professor of mathematics and astronomy at his alma mater. Winlock began work as a computer for the Almanac Office from his home base, before moving to Cambridge in 1852. In 1856 he became a Professor of Mathematics in the Navy assigned to the Naval Observatory, but in November took up duties as Superintendent of the Almanac Office. A charter member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1863, in 1866 Winlock was made Director of the Harvard College Observatory upon the death of George Bond
