$This facial likeness, located on the inside of the old twelve-inch refractor pier at the west end of the Main Building of the U.S. Naval Observatory, is presumed to be that of Captain Frederick V. McNair, Superintendent of the observatory from 28 June 1890 to 21 November 1894 during which time the Observatory moved to its present site from 24th and E Streets N.W. This photograph was taken by Astronomer Randolph T. Clarke, III during the summer of 1971.$ sup26a.jpg
