First Solar Orbiting Observatory. The Naval Research Laboratory satellite was launched on June 22, 1960.
It contained radiation detectors which observed the sun in two wavelength
bands-an ultraviolet band centered on the main emission of the hydrogen atom,
and an x-ray band near the high energy limit of the sun's normal x-ray
emission. The ultraviolet detector provided relatively steady signals which
showed very little variation which solar activity, while the x-ray flux
increased with solar activity.
