An 1876 view of the area to the west of the Smithsonian Institution. The building at the left center is the Agriculutre and Department with its formal garden to the right; the unfinished Washington Monmument is in the background. Note the brouad sweep of the Potomac at this time; the Lincoln Memorial was still to be located to the Momument's left in what in the photo is the Potomac. The 26-inch refractor's dome can be madeout two inches to the right of the Moument. This photograph illustrates well the watery surroundings of the Observatory at this time.
